Earth, Water, Wind & Sun That’s what we’re made from

  • Solar
  • Wind
  • Hydro
  • Geothermal

Solar

Radiant light and heat from the sun are harnessed using a range of technologies which capture solar energy.

Wind

Whether it’s generated offshore or on land, wind energy produces no air or water pollution while it’s generating electricity.

Hydro

Hydroelectric energy is one of the oldest and most established renewable sources in the U.S. Because water flow can be stored and controlled, hydropower can adjust its output to meet demand.

Geothermal

Deep inside the Earth lies hot water and steam. This geothermal energy can be used to heat homes and generate electricity cleanly and efficiently.

A REC (Renewable Energy Certificate) is created when a megawatt-hour (MWh) of clean energy is generated and added to the power grid. Your electricity is delivered through the shared grid by your local utility. SmartEnergy matches your use with RECs from renewable generators.

RECs are the property rights to the non-energy, environmental attributes (primarily the absence of carbon dioxide or CO2) that are derived from generating electricity using a clean, renewable fuel as opposed to a fossil fuel. The electricity goes into the grid, the environmental attributes are bundled and sold, and the owner of the REC can legally claim to have purchased renewable energy.

SmartEnergy buys renewable energy certificates (RECs) from renewable facilities such as wind, solar, hydro and geothermal. The source of the RECs varies by state and year and may include facilities in the U.S. and Canada. See your state’s page or your contract disclosure for details. Buying RECs supports renewable energy production while reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. 100% of SmartEnergy customers’ electricity use is matched by RECs.
